Philly Lacrosse Showcase Should Be Major Recruiting Event

Philly Lacrosse Showcase Should Be Major Recruiting Event

By Chris Goldberg, phillylacrosse.com

Episcopal Academy in suburban Philadelphia will serve as the host site November 21 for the inaugural Philly Lacrosse Showcase, a major recruiting event that will feature 210 of the top scholastic boys' lacrosse players in the Mid-Atlantic Region and beyond.

The event – which is being sponsored by Phillylacrosse.com – was developed by Andy Hayes, Episcopal Academy head coach and Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association (EPSLA) president. Hayes also co-directed the inaugural EPSLA Showcase in June.

That event brought more than 50 Division I coaches to Philadelphia to watch two All-Star Games and has helped lead to numerous scholarship opportunities for Philly players in the current senior and junior classes.

The overwhelming success of the Showcase caused Hayes to create the Philly Lacrosse Showcase in hopes of further promoting players in the Philadelphia region, while also opening it to players from other areas. This event will feature open registration for any sophomore, junior and senior in the country aspiring to play at the major college level.

The registration process (web site is www.phillyshowcase.com) will open Sept. 1 and close after 70 players, evenly distributed by position, have signed up in each class. Registration costs $130. The players will be guaranteed to compete in three morning games in front of college coaches. The tournament committee will choose the players to compete in the “Fab Forty” All-Star Game for each class in the afternoon.

Princeton Men's Lacrosse 2009 - Season Preview

Excerpts Courtesy: Princeton Athletic Communications

The 2009 season will see Princeton shake up its schedule a bit, as for the first time since 1991, there will be no regular-season game against Virginia. Instead, the third weekend of the season will see Princeton travel to UMBC on Friday night and then host Manhattan Sunday afternoon.

The rest of the schedule is basically the same as a year ago, with most of the sites reversed. Canisius will again come to Princeton, though on Feb. 21, for the earliest lacrosse game in school history. Princeton will participate in the Konica Minolta Face-Off against Johns Hopkins for the third straight year, though Duke-Maryland replaces Syracuse-Virginia as the other game at M&T Bank Stadium.

Princeton actually plays two games at an NFL venue this year, both of which are ESPNU telecasts. In addition to the Hopkins game, Princeton will play Syracuse at Giants Stadium in the Inside Lacrosse Big City Classic, a tripleheader that starts with North Carolina-Virginia and ends with Hofstra-Delaware. Albany comes to Princeton to complete a home-and-home in a game that will also be on ESPNU.

Five storylines to watch this season

1. Can Syracuse repeat?
It's a question that has been "repeated" since 1998 when Princeton capped a run of three consecutive national championships. But if there's a team poised to join those Tigers, it's this year's Orange, which returns six starters and adds a pair of transfers in senior midfielder Scott Kahoe ( Georgetown) and sophomore defenseman John Lade (Villanova) - both of whom are expected to start. If junior attackman Cody Jamieson (122 goals, 237points in two seasons at Onondaga Community College), a transfer, can clear eligibility, watch out. The key could be finding a replacement for faceoff specialist Danny Brennan, who led the nation with a .667 percentage.

2. Maybe this is the year …
… that a school other than the bluebloods - Syracuse, Johns Hopkins, Princeton or Virginia - captures the national title. One of those four programs has taken home the crown each year since 1992. The last team outside those four to win the national championship? North Carolina in 1991. Those Tar Heels, Maryland, Cornell, UMBC and Duke are deserving of mention.

3. Princeton on the rise
For the first time since 2005, the Tigers failed to collect an NCAA tournament invitation, but a repeat is unlikely. Why? Princeton has not spent May at home in back-to-back seasons under coach Bill Tierney since 1988-1989. Graduation took a toll on the defense, but the offense might be even stronger than last year's.

4. Is there a surprise team on the horizon?
Hofstra returns four starters who scored no fewer than 22goals each. Georgetown is still fuming over being left out of the tournament, and Bucknell and Colgate renew a budding rivalry with Navy. Brown might have a say in determining whether Cornell or Princeton takes home the Ivy League title.

5. Go west
All four teams that make up the Atlantic Coast Conference earned a seed, but the Great Western Lacrosse League didn't fare too poorly, sending Notre Dame, Ohio State and Denver to the NCAA tournament. Notre Dame and Ohio State advanced to the quarterfinals, with the Irish on the cusp of upsetting eventual champion Syracuse. Sending those three teams again could be tough, but not impossible.

Baltimore to host lacrosse Final Four in 2010 and 2011

The NCAA men's lacrosse Final Four will return to Baltimore in 2010 and 2011, tournament officials announced today.

NCAA officials cited that track record in explaining their selection.

Pennington and O’Dougherty Selected as Preseason All-Americans

Source: ScarletKnights.com

BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior midfielder Justin Pennington (Flemington, N.J.) and senior defenseman Chris O’Dougherty (Kinnelon, N.J) were selected as preseason All-Americans by Inside Lacrosse. The duo garnered third team honors in the annual Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-America list.

Pennington, who was named the 2009 ECAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year last week, led Rutgers in both points and assists in 2008. The midfielder tallied 32 points on 22 goals and 10 assists a year ago. Additionally, he ranked 11th in the country, averaging 5.15 groundballs per game. An honorable mention All-American in 2008, Pennington was recently ranked No. 7 by Inside Lacrosse in the magazine’s list of the Top-10 midfielders in the country.

O’Dougherty, who joined Pennington on last season’s All-ECAC First Team, anchored an RU defense that ranked Top-30 nationally in both scoring defense and man-down defense last spring.

The Scarlet Knights, who finished third in the ECAC in 2008, will begin their season on Saturday, Feb. 7 with a home matchup against Villanova at RU Turf Field.

Big East Lacrosse Debuts in 2010

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The BIG EAST Conference will formally begin sponsoring the sport of men's lacrosse beginning in the spring of 2010. The announcement about the Conference adding its 24th sport was made today by Commissioner Michael Tranghese following a unanimous vote by the league's 16 Directors of Athletics during their recent annual spring meeting.

The seven conference schools that will participate in the newly formed league are Georgetown, Notre Dame, Providence, Rutgers, St. John's, Syracuse and Villanova. The teams will play a six-game single round-robin regular season schedule. The BIG EAST will apply for an automatic bid to the 16-team NCAA Championship field.

Syracuse won the 2008 NCAA Men's Lacrosse national title, the program's 10th, after earning an at-large bid as a Division I Independent. Notre Dame also garnered a berth into the national tournament as an automatic qualifier from the Great Western Lacrosse League. Currently, Georgetown, Rutgers and St. John's are part of the ECAC, Providence is a member of the MAAC and Villanova plays in the Colonial Athletic Association.

"We are looking forward to the excitement that men's lacrosse will bring to the BIG EAST Conference," said Commissioner Tranghese. "We have schools with established and successful programs, which want to come together and compete under the BIG EAST brand."

Men's lacrosse will be the BIG EAST's 11th men's sport while the Conference conducts 13 women's sports.

Dartmouth 11, Princeton 9

Source: Princeton Athletic Communications

The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team celebrated as if it had won a championship. The Princeton men's lacrosse team still might. Princeton's 11-9 loss to Dartmouth Saturday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field carried with it a huge consolation prize for the Tigers: The Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament is still Princeton's to lose. With one week to go in the regular season, it's a pretty good prize to still have.

Princeton never led in the loss to the Big Green, and Philip Killian's goal with 10:31 remaining snapped a tie game and thwarted a big comeback attempt as the Big Green defeated the Tigers for the first time since 2003 and the eighth time in 56th all-time meetings.

Cornell, meanwhile, defeated Brown 11-7 in Ithaca, giving the Big Red a share of the Ivy League championship with the winner of next week's game between Princeton and Brown in Providence. A win by Brown would give Cornell the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament; a win by Princeton would give the Tigers the automatic bid. Brown cannot win the automatic bid to the tournament.

Ivy League Crown on the Line as Tigers travel to Dartmouth

Courtesy: Princeton Athletic Communications

The Ivy League men's lacrosse race comes down to this: Princeton, Brown can win the championship outright, any combination of those two plus Cornell can finish as co-champions or all three can finish as tri-champions. And all of this will be resolved by the results of three games.

The first two are this Saturday, when Princeton is at Dartmouth (1, WPRB FM 103.3) and Brown is at Cornell. The third game is next Saturday, when Princeton is at Brown.

Princeton's win over Cornell last weekend left the Tigers and Brown at 4-0 in the league, with Cornell at 4-1. The other four teams have been mathematically eliminated.
